What You're Really Buying With a Certified Subaru

A used car comes with question marks. Subaru Certified Pre-Owned swaps a lot of them for answers: a safety inspection done to Subaru standards, repairs or replacements for anything that doesn't pass, a CARFAX® report and a title that has to be clean.

That counts for more if your car doesn't see daily use. When a golf cart covers trips around town, a car can sit for days. On the longer drives, you want the battery tested, the tires in good shape and roadside help a phone call away.

Subaru is also a brand with staying power. By its own count, 97% of the vehicles it sold over the past 10 years are still on the road.3

Inspection Highlights

What Subaru's 152-Point Checklist Looks For

The checklist follows a set order, so nothing is left to memory. These are some of the checks that matter most for how you're likely to use the car.3

  1. Part 1

    Records and Coverage

    • Warranty and Maintenance Booklet in the glove compartment
    • Coverage inquiry for any exclusions
    • Maintenance performed if it's coming due or no service record exists
    • History report included
  2. Part 2

    The Walkaround

    • Paint chips and dings held to set size limits
    • Door and window seals checked for wear
    • Headlights on all settings, plus alignment
    • Spare or mobility kit, tool kit and jack
  3. Part 3

    Comfort and Convenience

    • Power windows, door locks and mirrors
    • Sunroof operation, seals and drains, when equipped
    • Heat and A/C on all settings
    • Driver and passenger seat movement in all positions
  4. Part 4

    Back Seat and Cargo

    • LATCH anchors
    • Child safety locks
    • Rear seat belts and upholstery
    • Rear defogger, then a cargo area detail
  5. Part 5

    Engine Bay and Lift

    • Battery test and clean cables
    • Radiator, cap and coolant condition
    • Brake pads, rotors and calipers
    • Undercarriage inspection for damage and fluid leaks
  6. Part 6

    On the Road

    • Wheel balance and steering wheel alignment
    • Cruise control operation
    • Engine and transmission performance
    • A recheck for leaks and odd smells after the drive

Hybrid models add their own checks, such as the start/stop system and the pedestrian approach system. Models with an EV battery must meet a 70% minimum on a charging test.

Two Sign-Offs

A Subaru-trained technician and the service manager each have to sign off that the mechanical items were inspected.

Coverage, Decoded

How Long the Subaru CPO Warranty Actually Lasts

Subaru's wording matters here. The certified coverage is a factory-backed powertrain vehicle service agreement, good to 7 years or 100,000 miles, with no deductible on standard security plans.1,2 It covers engine, transaxle and differential components rather than the whole car, which is where the optional plan below comes in. Any time left on the factory warranties, including the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, stays with the car. That warranty covers the entire vehicle, subject to its exclusions, for 3 years or 36,000 miles.4

The years count from the car's original warranty start date, so ask us for that date on any car you're comparing. If that date was 4 years ago, roughly 3 years remain, mileage permitting.

What Else Comes Along

  • Roadside assistance around the clock1
  • CARFAX vehicle history report
  • Owner Loyalty Coupon5
  • SiriusXM® 3-month trial subscription, on equipped vehicles6
  • One-year MySubaru® Safety Package trial, on equipped vehicles7
  • Access to special finance rates8

Counted from the original warranty start date

New Vehicle Limited Warranty43 years / 36,000 miles
Powertrain Limited Warranty45 years / 60,000 miles
Certified Pre-Owned Powertrain Coverage17 years / 100,000 miles
Optional Added Security Gold Plus9Up to 10 years / 100,000 miles

The bars measure time. Reaching a term's mileage limit ends it early, so a car driven a lot may not see the full term.

Thinking Longer Term?Subaru's optional Added Security Gold Plus plan can stretch coverage as far as 10 years or 100,000 miles from the original warranty start date. Beyond the powertrain, it covers all major systems, including wear and tear of covered components, plus technology like EyeSight and DriverFocus®. It leaves out a short list that includes maintenance items, body parts, glass, brake pads, wiper blades, hoses, belts and batteries. For covered repairs, you also get towing, rental car reimbursement and trip interruption benefits, plus 24-hour emergency roadside help. Subaru says Added Security is honored throughout the United States and Canada.9

Common Questions

Subaru CPO Questions From Villages Shoppers

What does the 152-point inspection cover?

It runs from records and title checks through the exterior, cabin, engine bay and undercarriage to a road test. Anything that doesn't meet Subaru standards gets repaired or replaced before the car can be sold as certified.

Does the 7-year/100,000-mile coverage start when I buy the car?

No. It counts from the vehicle's original warranty start date. A newer certified Subaru will have more of that term left than an older one, so ask us for that date as well as the mileage.

Does certified coverage include everything on the car?

No. The certified coverage is for the powertrain: engine, transaxle and differential components. Whatever remains of the factory warranties also stays with the vehicle, and the New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers the entire vehicle, subject to its exclusions, for 3 years or 36,000 miles. For other major systems, Subaru offers the optional Added Security Gold Plus plan at additional cost. Its exclusions are a short list that includes maintenance items, body parts, glass, brake pads, wiper blades, hoses, belts and batteries. Ask for the complete list.

Is there a deductible?

Subaru lists no deductible for the certified powertrain coverage and notes that this applies to standard security plans only. Optional plans have their own deductible choices, so ask us to show you the terms.

Do I have to drive to the showroom to see what's available?

Not at first. Our certified inventory page shows current Subaru listings, with photos, mileage and details. When one looks right, call sales at (352) 718-2202 to confirm it's available and set up a time.

Can I trade in the car I brought to Florida?

Yes. Start with our trade valuation page, and our team can walk you through how that value applies to a certified Subaru.

Are there special finance rates on certified Subaru vehicles?

Subaru offers them for well-qualified buyers, subject to credit approval. Rates change, so apply online or ask us what's current.
