A revised 2.5-liter four-cylinder BOXER® engine powers the 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness, and it delivers a stout 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. The engine pairs nicely with all-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission that now has a shorter final drive ratio. Selectable drive modes are standard, with the X-MODE® Dual Mode offering Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud options.
All-terrain tires drape the SUV's trim-exclusive 17-inch anthracite wheels and offer better performance on slick and gravelly trails and roads. The Subaru Forester Wilderness has improved approach, departure, and breakover angles compared to previous versions. Those angles are now 23.5, 25.5, and 21 degrees, respectively. The SUV's roof rails can support up to 800 lbs when the Subaru Forester Wilderness is at a standstill.
Previous iterations of the Subaru Forester Wilderness had 9.2 inches of ground clearance. That number has increased to 9.3 inches. A faster center differential lockup reduces wheelspin on the trail and provides improved stability for cornering on the road. With the right equipment, the Subaru Forester Wilderness can tow up to 3,500 lbs and haul as much as 69.1 cubic feet of cargo.
