The 2026 Subaru Outback is completely redesigned and now offers two SUBARU BOXER engine configurations. The standard 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine produces 180 horsepower and is available on Premium, Limited, and Touring trims, achieving up to 31 mpg on the highway. XT and Wilderness trims use a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine producing 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, with towing capacity up to 3,500 pounds. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is standard on every single Outback trim at no extra charge, paired with X-MODE with Hill Descent Control for off-road and wet-road confidence.

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is now exclusively hybrid-powered, producing 226 horsepower on FWD trims and 236 horsepower on AWD configurations. The RAV4 Hybrid delivers up to 44 mpg combined, a significant fuel economy advantage over the Outback's gas configurations. However, drivers who want a traditional non-hybrid engine no longer have that option with the RAV4. The Outback's 260-horsepower turbo option also surpasses every RAV4 Hybrid configuration in raw power output. The Outback's Wilderness trim further adds 9.5 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and aluminum skid plates for genuine off-road capability that the RAV4 cannot match in standard form.

EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is standard on every 2026 Subaru Outback trim, covering pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, lane departure warning, sway warning, and lead vehicle start alert. For 2026 the redesigned Outback adds a new emergency stop feature that can safely pull the vehicle over if the driver becomes unresponsive — a capability the RAV4 does not offer. The Outback also adds active torque vectoring AWD for improved cornering stability, and a new standard 12.1-inch touchscreen replaces the previous 11.6-inch display.

The RAV4's Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is a capable system and the RAV4 has an equally strong reliability reputation. Both vehicles offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Outback's new 12.1-inch standard touchscreen and updated controls with physical knobs and buttons for key functions give it a usability edge over the RAV4's touchscreen-heavy interface on lower trims.

The redesigned 2026 Subaru Outback is larger and roomier than its predecessor, and it outpaces the RAV4 in several key interior and cargo measurements. The Outback offers 35 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, compared to 37.8 cubic feet in the RAV4 — a slight RAV4 advantage behind the seats. However, with rear seats folded the Outback opens to 80.5 cubic feet versus 70.4 cubic feet in the RAV4, a 10.1 cubic-foot maximum cargo advantage. New for 2026, standard roof rails on the Outback support up to 800 pounds of load — significantly more than typical roof rail ratings — and a wider rear load floor makes it easier to slide gear in and out.

Rear legroom in the Outback is 39.1 inches compared to 37.8 inches in the RAV4. Total passenger volume in the redesigned Outback is 109 cubic feet, and the updated interior features more intuitive controls, improved material quality, and water-repellent upholstery standard on Wilderness trims. Ground clearance of 8.7 inches on standard trims and 9.5 inches on Wilderness gives the Outback a clear advantage over the RAV4's 8.1 inches for drivers who regularly navigate unpaved Florida roads or off-road environments.
